Come join Living Jazz as one of our Counselors during our annual Jam Camp 2025 in Loma Mar with a diverse group of dedicated individuals committed to creating a safe, nurturing space for our young artists to be inspired!

Jam Camp West Counselors are responsible for creating a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive environment for campers. They facilitate various activities, ensure the well-being of campers, promote positive social interactions, and serve as role models. Jam Camp West Counselors play a crucial role in the overall camp experience, fostering personal growth, self-confidence, and positive relationships among campers.

Job Requirements

  • Enthusiasm: Passion for working with children and creating positive experiences for them.

  • Leadership Skills: Ability to lead, guide, and inspire campers.

  • Communication: Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work well in a team and collaborate

  • Desire to work in a highly diverse community of children and adults

  • Must be 21 years of age or older

Preferred but not required Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Jam Camp West, Jazz Camp West, and/or other Living Jazz programs

  • Previous experience working with young people ages 10-17

  • Enthusiastic, mature, responsible, creative, and good sense of humor

  • Skills and experience as an instrumentalist, dancer, or vocalist a plus

  • Love of music and the outdoors. Musical proficiency a plus

Physical Requirements

This position performs its duties both indoors and outdoors exposed to seasonal weather temperatures for the duration of the scheduled shift and must be able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:

  • Stand, sit, kneel, walk, bend, and perform repetitive motions during outdoor activities as needed.

  • Traverse safely throughout the entirety of the campgrounds

  • See and respond quickly to situations.

  • Ability to hear and speak clearly to direct campers and co-counselors.

  • Able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities

  • Able to maintain attention and a high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to spend majority the of time outdoors in camp setting

Compensation & Benefits

This is a seasonal position scheduled from Saturday, July 12th through Friday, July 18th, 2025, and includes an overnight mandatory training starting on Friday July 11 starting at 10am.

CA Labor Code §1182.4(a) provides that student employees, camp counselors and program counselors are exempt from minimum wage and overtime requirements since Living Jazz provides at least 85% of the minimum wage based upon a 40-hour workweek. In 2025, Living Jazz will pay counselors $650 for one week of service at Jam Camp West, plus room and board.
