Living Jazz transforms lives through the music, spirit, and culture of jazz in the Bay Area community by educating students and artists of all ages and abilities.
Since 1984, Living Jazz has designed and launched unique music education and performance programs that instill confidence, responsibility and ambition in children; motivate people of all ages and backgrounds to reach their personal and creative potential; and unite diverse communities through their shared love of jazz and related genres. Our current programs include Jazz Camp West, Jam Camp West, “In the Name of Love”, the Annual Musical Tribute honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., The Living Jazz Children’s Project, Jazz Search West, and the (Not So) Tiny House Concert Series.
Living Jazz understands that music is an inherent component of a healthy and vibrant society and feels that every child and adult has the right to accessible, high quality music immersion experiences.

Job Title: Archival Intern
Job Duration: December 2023 - April 2024
Job Location: On-site in Oakland and Berkeley, California, Hybrid In-Person and Remote
Hourly Commitment: 8-10 hours/week

Job Summary:
The Archival Intern will play a crucial role in unearthing, categorizing, and preserving the vast collection of digital and print materials amassed over Living Jazz's 40-year history. The intern will lead a project to establish an organized online database that holds these materials, ensuring their accessibility and preservation. Additionally, the intern will collaborate with the Marketing and Development Manager to curate a presentation showcasing key highlights from each decade of Living Jazz's journey.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop a comprehensive system for categorizing and organizing archival materials.
Digitize and upload DVDs, thumb drives, printed photos, and written materials to a Google Drive repository.
Digitally preserve cassette tapes and VHS video recordings, making them accessible through the online archive.
Engage with the community to collect external archival materials that contribute to the organization's history.
Safeguard physical artifacts by using protective casing and designing an efficient storage system.
Utilize tools like Google Drive, Google Sheets, and Google Workspace for archiving and organization.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Preferred fields of study or interests include Music with emphasis on Bay Area scene, Library Sciences, Archival Studies, History, Art History, Ethno Musicography, Nonprofit Arts Administration.
Proficiency in digital archiving software and database management tools.
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and self-motivation.
Effective communication skills and a responsible work ethic.
Supervision and Training:
The Archival Volunteer will be supervised by the Marketing and Development Manager.
The volunteer will work closely with their supervisor to design and implement an effective archiving system.
